Poor Web Pages
>>This page is under construction.
There are a lot of people claiming to be "Web page designers". Many
of them have no idea what they are doing. They know what (to them)
looks "nifty", but they either do not really understand the Web or do not
mind excluding large chunks of the browsing population. Either way, the
result is that they design poor Web pages.
Here is how to build a poor Web page:
- The red-on-black page is very
popular. What designers of these pages do not realize is -
- Some Web browsers do not contrast these two colors very well.
- Not all browser (and not all platforms) allow the user to
alter the colors.
- Some of us have dark screens which do not contrast these two
colors very well.
- Roughly 10% of the male population is red-green color blind, making
it difficult to distinguish the text.
Some poor saps, like myself, have all of these problems. The
trouble is not restricted to red text and black backgrounds. Any dim or
low-intensity text will cause problems when placed on a black or
dark background, no matter how "electric" the text color.
- Other poor text contrast pages can be
found as well. You will often find Web pages on which the text gets
lost against an image background.
- Small fonts can drive a user crazy. They
are used by designers who do not understand that all font sizes are
relative and do not appear a uniform size on every screen.
- (More to come)
